The talk will introduce the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and their circle as they rejected the conventions idealisations that they were taught at art school and reinvented art and life for modern times. Dazzling paintings tackled taboo subjects – modern work, love, marriage, heartbreak, death, religion and myth- in unflinching detail. The Pre-Raphaelites’ convictions, relationships and lifestyle were as radical as their art. Their ideas inspired new generations. William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones lead a second phase of the movement that championed modern beauty. They became celebrities, pioneering international careers, harnessing the power of the printing press to expose their art to new mass audiences that reached Hungary, Europe and the rest of the world.
